Nana & Papa's Nest, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation parrot sanctuary and rescue founded by Dr. Dorothy Rice-Lara, DBA, Founder and Executive Director and Kenneth Lara, Founder and Program Manager, (aka Nana and Papa), whose mission is to ensure a holistic, healthy, safe-haven, and the well-being of parrots who have been abused or neglected. We take in parrots who are surrendered to veterinarian’s, animal shelters, and from owners who are no longer able to take care of their birds due to unforeseen circumstances. Many have been neglected, and are ill, or injured at the time of surrender. Some may never be adoptable and become permanent residents at the sanctuary.

Veterinarian's, Animal Control, or Releasing Agency please call Nana & Papa's Nest, Inc. at 757-935-2848 to arrange transporting the parrot. Parrots being transported from veterinarian's, animal control, or releasing agency are currently the only birds being accepted due to our capacity.
Surrendering or Transferring Pet Parrots!
Nana & Papa's Nest, Inc. is a Southeastern Virginia 501 (c)(3) Non-profit Parrot Rescue, Sanctuary, and Rehabilitation Center located in Wakefield, VA. Surrendering your pet parrot is not easy, and we understand the emotional stress in making this decision. We are here to assist you through the transition. We are sympathetic and passionate towards the emotional state you are experiencing in making this difficult decision.

- Owners who are willing to wait please submit your surrender application and you will be contacted.
- Owners who feel surrendering your bird is an emergency please contact us directly before submitting the surrender application.
- Veterinarian's, Animal Control, or Releasing Agency please call Nana & Papa's Nest, Inc. at 757-935-2848 to arrange transporting the parrot.

- Adoption & Foster Process
- Live within 130 miles of Wakefield, VA
- Have not been convicted of animal or domestic abuse, neglect, or cruelty
- Agree to home inspection and
- Agree to a background check
- A US citizen
- Must be a Virginia resident
- Complete the prequalification adoption application by selecting this link.
